Get Yourself a Personal Motto

My personal motto is this: Explore with passion.

To me, this means that whenever possible I fully experience the world around me.

I often think that I should have been born in the 16th century in what was known as the Age of Exploration.  During this time period, Europeans crisscrossed the globe searching for new lands, knowledge, and wealth.

These people woke up each day not knowing what they would see, where they would go, or who they would encounter. Talk about exhilarating!

While there may not be many “new” places to discover, I strive to live with the same sense of daily wonder that I may have felt if I had been exploring the world 500 years earlier.

Truth is, no matter where I am, there are always new places to find, people to meet, and new things to learn.  These experiences are everything to me.

Create Your Own Personal Motto

There is a reason why nations, schools, religious bodies, and most organizations have a motto. When it comes to expressing what you stand for, it just works.

Ever since I identified my personal motto I’ve experienced a sense of beautiful clarity when I go through my life.  It allows me to rationalize my decisions and provides me with a constant source of inspiration.

That’s why I think it is important that everyone take the time to establish their own personal motto.

It may take some reflection to hone in on the right words. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to guide you in the right direction:

1. What is your greatest success?

2. What is your greatest failure?

3. Who do you want to be?

4. What value/moral is most important to you?

Not easy questions, but if you can answer them you are well on your way to creating a personal motto you can be excited about living out.

Okay, I Have a Motto. Now What?

1. Speak it often

Say it to yourself when you wake up. Then say it again in the shower. Repeat it when you feel stressed. Say it out loud when people question your decisions.

2. Write it down and put it somewhere you will see it

I have mine written down on my fridge.  I also have it on a slip of paper in my wallet.

3. Live it

Your motto is only any good if you live it out. So live it and live it fully.
